FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHS

Surrender – a new collection of photographic artworks, created on the Dingle Peninsula, West Kerry, Ireland, over the past two years. Photographer Jan O’Connell focuses in a new way on portraits of individual rocks in West Kerry. She has also photographed the dynamic sea that forms and interplays with these structures.

“They are my pillars of survival – emblems of endurance, custodians of courage set out on our shores to remind us of a new path. Even if this path is not the one, we had originally intended. These rocks represent the marginal – whose existence, by design or by default, has been separated from the established mainstream norms”

They are printed on 100% Cotton Hahnemühle Photo Rag Matte 308gsm photographic paper using Archival Ink. The photography prints are signed by the artist and packaged with utmost care before being shipped unframed.

All photographic prints are exclusive limited editions and each comes with its own certificate.
There are 5 large prints, 10 medium prints, and 20 small prints available.

Artist Statement

Surrender – This work explores our relationship, both internal and external, with the natural landscape. It is a relationship with the Sea and Rocks of a rugged West Kerry.

As the Landscape cannot express empathy for us in a direct or conscious sense. Over time we have imbued the landscape with an emotional importance and a significance that provides resources for survival, inspiration, and a sense of belonging and identity. Through my photography I can infuse something human onto these rocks and ocean images, creating meaning with an immersive connection.

The visceral architecture of my rocks is often camouflaged in the immense beauty of their surroundings. Holding some ancient and intangible force, they exude eternal mystery while protecting us with their powerful energy.

These Rocks are kept alive in this Gaeltacht, keepers of ancient secrets, loved locally by their given names. With my images I am forging a link to this ancient mythology, while being awarded a sense of place. This landscape holds time and creates visions when one surrenders.
